Patron Saint of pharmacists, students, people combating temptations, people dealing with tuberculosis, and people grieving the death of parents

Saint Gemma Galgani is known as the patron saint of pharmacists, students, people combating temptations, people dealing with tuberculosis, and people grieving the death of parents. Her feast day is every 11th of April. Born to a traditional Catholic family on March 12, 1878, in a little town in Italy, Saint Gemma Galgani was often called the “Flower of Lucca” and the “Daughter of Passion.”

Influenced by her mother, she was very passionate about praying since she was young. At 19 years old, she became an orphan. She lost her parents due to tuberculosis, and her eldest brother and youngest sister died too. Thus, she was left to raise her younger siblings with her Aunt Carolina’s help.

Two men wanted to marry Gemma, but she chose silence and continued worshiping God. When she became seriously ill with meningitis, she kept praying to Gabriel Possenti, the Venerable Passionist. Miraculously, she got cured. She also showed signs of the holy stigmata and even had a chance to speak with her guardian angel, Jesus, and the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Unfortunately, she also contracted tuberculosis and passed away on April 11, 1903, at the age of 25.

Prayer to Saint Gemma

O Holy Gemma, I am near you, help me to pray. You know what I and those near me need; look after my urgent needs and my spiritual and material wants. You take care of them! I confide in you and entrust all to your loving care.
Offer up to Jesus that tender and constant care that you bore Him here on earth.
Oh holy Gemma, you who physically suffered all the pains of the Passion of Jesus, I beseech of you the grace to meditate on and live the Passion of Jesus, and the sufferings of Holy Mary. Pray that I will be able to walk in the path of humility, simplicity, love and sacrifice, fulfilling at all times and in all ways, the holy will of God. Let me live united with Jesus, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and you, for all eternity. Amen.
