Patron Saint of lawyers and the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples

Born Mark Rey in 1577, Saint Fidelis is the patron saint of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and Patron Saint of Lawyers. He finished a doctorate in philosophy as well as civil and canon law degrees. His feast day is every 24th of April.

As a lawyer, he passionately fought for the underprivileged and oppressed. In addition, he could not withstand the injustice and corruption of his colleagues. Thus, he decided to end his law career and became a priest instead. This was when he used the religious name “Fidelis,” which means faithful.

He continued to help the disadvantaged and the sick. Later on, he became the head of a group of Capuchins wherein he preached and tried to bring Zwinglians and Calvinists in Switzerland back to the Faith. Although some Calvinists did, he was still martyred for his efforts.

Saint Fidelis was killed by a group of armed men. In 1746, he was canonized.

Prayer to Saint Fidelis

St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen, you grew greatly in holiness during your time as a student and a teacher. You practiced penance and tried to grow in virtue, out of love for God. Please bring my petitions before God Whom you loved so dearly! Your modesty, meekness, and chastity were well-known to those around you. Your holy practices helped you to grow in openness to God and in a willingness to serve Him throughout the rest of your life.  Pray for me, that I may grow in virtue each day. Pray that I may serve Him joyfully each day of my life.

Please also pray for (mention your intentions here).

St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen, pray for us!
